Charter Hall Community Development Funds are community partnerships established with Charter Hall developments to address a community issue in the area of the development.
Charter Hall, the owners of Raine Square in Perth’s CBD, chose the Raine Medical Research Foundation as its charity partner of choice, undertaking a corporate commitment to help support the Foundation’s future funding of medical research.
In August 1957, Mary Raine signed the Deed of Trust bequeathing her property empire to The University of
Western Australia. The Raine Medical Research Foundation represents the largest bequest received by UWA for
medical research.
The Foundation, celebrating its 60th year in 2017, has allocated in excess of $50 million for medical research, and
commits in excess of $1.3 million for research programs every year. It has supported scores of major research
projects, funded two Centres of Excellence, established fellowships and scholarships, sponsored the visits of
numerous international scholars, participated in major joint ventures, and fostered medical research at the
undergraduate level.
Charter Hall is currently undertaking a $75m redevelopment of Raine Square to transform the central CBD site in Perth into a seven day a week entertainment, dining and retail precinct. The redevelopment will deliver 40 new stores and will see cinemas return to the Perth CBD for the first time since 2013. Charter Hall is also delivering on its plan to transform Raine Square into a major Perth destination. In honour of Mary Raine, the original owner of the precinct, it will also see heritage restoration of the Hotel Wentworth and Royal Hotel — both synonymous with Mary Raine — to sympathetically incorporate them into the entire precinct, which has a targeted completion date in the fourth quarter of 2018.
